Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences — Applications are now open! Closing Date: 31st July 2014. Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, one of Asia’s top universities, is hiring a number of post-doctoral fellows in various disciplines. At least one will be hired in the Environmental Sustainability Research Cluster:
- Human Capital, Economic Growth and Sustainability: No or little accumulation of human capital and leakage or under-utilization of human capital in some ASEAN countries are relatively apparent compared to other Asian countries. Although there could be many other reasons for the stagnated economic growth in those economies, the lower level of human capital might be the critical reason. Interestingly, a few ASEAN countries present an opposite case of this in which a high level of human capital vis-a-vis a high economic growth and sustainability have been achieved. This study concerns about whether and how human capital has influenced economic growth and ultimately contributed to sustainability in ASEAN countries. This study tests the critical importance of human capital in economic growth and prosperity of an ASEAN economy quantitatively and qualitatively.
- Climate Change, Environment, and Food Security: We want an interdisciplinary approach to evaluate the complex nexus between climate change and regional food security in the Asia-Pacific. Questions to be addressed include: How to grow more from less in a sustainable manner? How to optimize the entire food value chain from field to fork to reduce the carbon footprint, protect the environment and support biological diversity, cause less water pollution and soil erosion, raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy? Research should examine the regional initiatives on, the current state of, and future prospects for, mitigations and resilience with regard to climate change and food security vis-à-vis other regions of the world.
